Yala National Park is the most famous National Park of Sri Lanka. In size it is the second largest, but together with the adjoining or neighbouring national parks Kumana, Bundala and Lunugamvehera this south-eastern region is the largest protected zone of the island, a must-see for nature lovers and wildlife enthusiasts.
Yala’s diversity of eco systems. ranging from evergreen tropical forests, scrub and grass savannas, rocky hills, freshwater lakes and swamps, marine marshlands and bracky lagoons to sandy beaches, is the reason why this National Park harbours so many plant and animal species and a density of wildlife unsurpassed in South Asia. Yala is famous particularly for offering best chances to observe leopards. Half- or full-day safaris starting from Tissamaharama or Kataragama or Hambantota are quite popular with foreign guests of the country. Real camping safaris were restricted recently, but are managable if combining a crossing of Yala with overnight stays in Kumana National Park just at the opposite site of the river Kumbukkan Oya. |
