Ella is a sleepy village situated in a beautful landscape on the southern edge of Sri Lanka's highlands. Ella is situated in Sri Lanka’s second largest tea region called Uva. It is famous for its panoramic view through the Ella Gap to the southern lowlands. You can enjoy this view drinking a cup of tea in the former resthouse at the mainroad. However, the most spectacular view are those from the Panorama and Ambiente guesthouses further uphill. Here you can see the Ella waterfalls, the Ella Gap and the far-away peak of the Namununkula Mountain near Badulla.
You can reach Ella by train. The most scenic part of the highland railroad from Colombo to Badulla is between Hatton and Haputale, but from Haputale it is only one hour more to Ella. In the Ella Gap there is another picturesque waterfall called Ravana Ella. The nearby Ravana Ella cave is said to be one of the places where Sita was kept hidden by Ravana during her capitivity on Lanka. |
